Overview

Kathy O'Faolain is an American woman who seems to have it all—a loving husband, a satisfying job helping troubled teens, and an adorable young son. She lives happily with her Irish husband, Pearse, in Dublin—but her life is forever changed when Pearse's brother is murdered by Protestant terrorists in Northern Ireland. When Pearse feels obligated to return home to the north and take over his brother's role as a Republica activist, Kathy's life is turned upside down. Struggling to understand the hate that plagues this troubled land, she watches the violence creep closer and closer to the people she loves—and soon she must make a heartbreaking choice between her husband and her son's future.

In June 1991, Pearce and Kathleen O'Faolain leave their comfortable life in Dublin to return to Pearce's family home in strife-torn Ulster. His brother and sister-in-law have been brutally murdered by Protestant terrorists, and Pearce feels obligated to take his brother's place as a Republican activist. Kathleen is devastated, but nothing she says dissuades her husband from thrusting them both into the midst of the brutality and violence of suburban Belfast. Her American upbringing has not prepared her for the depths of hatred she encounters. Her young son's brush with death on an innocent school outing is the final blow, and she makes the painful decision to take him and leave. A powerful and deeply moving story of terror, death, hope, and love, Bellacera's (Northern Lights, New Concepts, 1997) novel is remarkable for its intensity and vivid portrayal of life in Northern Ireland at a time when peace seems almost possible. Recommended.--Susan Gene Clifford, Aerospace Corp., El Segundo, CA
