Overview

Young readers will enjoy browsing through this heavily illustrated capsule history of the human race. It opens in the time before written history— approximately 1,800,000 B.C.—when the first human beings are known to have lived in Africa. Moving rapidly on, boys and girls will find dates for the beginning of farm communities (c. 6000 B.C) in what is now Turkey, the dawn of Egyptian and Sumerian cultures beginning some 3,000 years later, the development of civilizations in Greece, Rome, China, and the Indus Valley, the rise and feudal wars of European kingdoms, the age of world exploration in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the rise of America, the wars of the twentieth century, the race to the Moon, and the world after 9/11. Hundreds of important dates are listed that mark major historical events, life spans of world leaders, major catastrophes, and great human achievements. The illustrations on every page are lively and in full color, and the book's endpapers display dated tables of ruling dynasties around the world.

VOYA - Kim Zach

Beginning with the age before written language and ending with the current decade, this slim volume includes hundreds of important dates and events from prehistory to modern times. Among its highlights are the development of civilizations, the influence of early cultures, major wars, world exploration, and the positive accomplishments of many famous persons. The book is divided into colorful, well-illustrated two-page spreads that move the story chronologically through various time periods. Those periods first span thousands of years and then focus on a century or two, finally gradually narrowing to fifty years or less. The page spreads are titled to summarize the essence of that particular era. Some examples are Crusades and War (3000 to 1700 BC), Palaces and Plague (1300 to 1401), Tax and a Tea Party (1715 to 1775), Crossing Continents (1850 to 1900), and The Race to the Moon (1955 to 1969). Every section includes an overview, a brief time line of at least ten significant dates, a list of important events with commentary for each, and remarks about famous figures. Although compact, the book presents a comprehensive picture of world history so that even with a casual perusal readers will take away a wealth of information. An equal balance between illustrations and text will make this book enjoyable for students of all reading abilities. History teachers as well may appreciate its concise and lively organization as a valuable classroom resource and addition to their lesson plans.
