Synopsis

(Warning - contains spoilers.) The Ashbys - Aunt Beatrice and Simon, Eleanor, and twins Jane and Ruth - live at Latchetts. At 21 Simon will inherit a trust fund and Latchetts. Simon had a twin brother, Patrick, who disappeared at age 13, apparently leaving a suicide note. Brat Farrar, an orphan, meets Alec Loding, a complete stranger, in London. Alec knows the Ashbys and, seeing a strong resemblance between Brat and Simon, suggests Brat should impersonate Patrick, and as the elder brother, claim his inheritance. Brat agrees - Alec will coach Brat on the family details and Brat will give him a share of the money. "Patrick" arrives at Latchetts. Simon seems to accept him. But Brat believes that Simon knows that "Patrick" is a fake. Then Simon tells Brat he in fact murdered Patrick. Brat decides to investigate Patrick's disappearance at a quarry where he believes Patrick's body is hidden. Simon is waiting for him and tries to kill him. In the struggle they fall into the quarry and Simon is killed. Patrick's bones are found. Great-uncle Charles Ashby arrives. He recognizes Brat as the son of Walter Ashby, a long-dead cousin. Brat is now a legitimate family member, and begins a relationship with Eleanor
