Overview

The imaging information radiologists and sonographers have requested is here -- everything you need to properly perform and accurately interpret breast ultrasound exams with confidence!

Step-by-step guidance takes you through each phase -- from equipment requirements, technique and relevant anatomy, to specific applications. And the book's expert descriptions help you understand targeted and non-targeted indications, distinguish benign from malignant nodules, assess a wide variety of commonly encountered lesions, image the male breast, evaluate and stage breast cancer patients, and much more!

Synopsis

This volume is a complete and definitive guide to performing and interpreting breast ultrasound examinations. The book explains every aspect of the examination in detail—from equipment selection and examining techniques, to correlations between sonographic and mammographic findings, to precise characterization of sonographic abnormalities. A chapter on Doppler characterization of breast lesions is included. Complementing the text are more than 1,500 illustrations, including ultrasound scans, corresponding mammographic images, and diagrams of key aspects of the examination.

Reviewer:Christine M Bliven, MD(University of Colorado Health Sciences Center)
Description:This comprehensive reference predominantly addresses evaluation of mammographic and palpable abnormalities in the breasts using sonography. Sonographic investigation of breast implants, the male breast, ultrasound-guided intervention, and the surgically altered breast are also covered.
Purpose:The author's goal for this book is to educate radiologists and sonographers in earlier recognition of breast cancer using sonography. He also describes sonographic diagnosis of benign disease to limit unnecessary biopsies. Histopathologic correlation is emphasized, so the book is also valuable for breast pathologists and breast surgeons.
Audience:This is an important reference for practicing physicians, radiology residents, sonographers, and mammography technologists who perform breast ultrasound. I agree with the author that not only radiologists, but also breast pathologists and surgeons will benefit. The author is a well-known authority in diagnostic ultrasound.
Features:The book emphasizes normal anatomy and histopathology of the breast to better correlate sonographic findings with various anatomic changes. It is liberally illustrated with high quality drawings, anatomic photomicrographs, and sonographic images. Mammographic images are also provided, since most patients undergoing breast ultrasound first have diagnostic mammography. Also included are highly informative sections on sonographic evaluation of implants, nipple discharge, axillary and internal mammary lymph nodes, and the male breast. Ultrasound-guided intervention and Doppler evaluation are covered in separate chapters.
Assessment:This is the most comprehensive book available on breast ultrasound. Sonographic equipment has rapidly improved in quality; the ultrasound images in this book are all up to date. References for each topic are extensive and include classic papers as well as recent citations. This is an outstanding reference and a valuable addition to every clinic where sonographic evaluation of the breast is performed.
