Overview

"Bridging the Chasm Between Research and Practice: A Guide to Major Educational Research is written for anyone concerned about the education of the 48 million children in elementary and secondary schools in the United States. Obviously, a large number of parents, teachers, legislators, school board members, and taxpayers have a keen interest in these children's education since it costs $8,000 per year to educate a single child in the U.S." Bridging the Chasm Between Research and Practice is a bridge across the research-practice chasm. It is the first serious effort to thoroughly explain education science to the layperson in an understandable and conversational manner. The accumulated body of knowledge on the following critical topics is simply and thoughtfully explained: grade retention, dropouts, radical differences in children rearing practices, remedial programs that work, class size, school size, high stakes testing, and graduation tests. The vast implications of this research are also discussed.

Editorials

Donald Kauchak

This is an important book about important topics in education. Everyone who cares about the lives of children should understand how poverty and early experiences affect children's success in school. Every concerned citizen should know how educational practices such as grade retention and high-stakes testing influence school success. The author effectively uses both empirical data and incisive quotes from educational researchers to illuminate these issues and practices. Prospective teachers and practicing teachers, as well as the general public, will gain valuable insights from this book.

Dr. Alan T. Seagren

Dr. Van Horn has produced a book that makes a significant contribution to the field of educational research and practice. "Words of Fire" summarizes research findings that challenge current educational practices and presents ample evidence to indicate changes need to be made. Teachers, professors, administrators and policy makers should find this to be a valuable resource.

April 2009 American School Board Journal

Several topics...are explained in an understandable and thoughtful fashion. People inside and outside of education will gain valuable insights from this book.

William Watson Purkey

Royal Van Horn has written a most timely, engaging, visionary, and needed book. In the present mean-spirited dark age of mandatory retention, high stakes testing, and negative labeling of students, teachers, and schools, Van Horn's new book represents a renaissance of research based, clear thinking about such challenges as dropout rates, class size, and high-stakes testing. It is a powerful addition to the professional literature.
