Synopsis
How the British governed India after the Crown assumed the formal responsibility in 1858 with Queen Victoria as India s Queen-Empresh? It was of course a many-teired system. Under the Queen or King was the Secretary of State for India, answerable to British Parliament in London. At home, in New Delhi, the Viceroy and Governor-General in council presided over the over-all Indian administration. Under him functioned the provincial governments headed by the Governor. Then the Districts had their own administrative set-up with commissioners, District Magistrates and Collectors. Elected or partially elected local bodies helped the administrative machinery at the grassroots level. The book presents a detailed account of the entire paraphernalia of the Indian administration, continues to this day. For the study of the historical process of the administration it is an authentic reference work.Book Details
