British writers volumes 1-7 and Supplement I were published originally by the British Council as a series of individual pamphlets, which were revised, updated, and re-edited for publication as a set by Scribner's. The 26 essays in Supplement II were all specially commissioned by Scribner's to add coverage of important modern writers not included in the British Council's pamphlet series. Supplement II also contains a comprehensive index to all of the writers and works that are discussed throughout the series.
