Children's Literature

This is the true life story of how Julius Miller became known as Bronco Charlie. It is also the story of the Pony Express and how Bronco Charlie became their youngest rider. This book is a good addition to the social studies curriculum. It is also a great way for teachers to introduce persistence and job performance as they teach lessons about career education. Orback's illustrations show Charlie's emotions as he becomes a great bronco rider through his fearful journey delivering the mail. Children will be at the edge of their seats as they listen to what happens to Charlie during his first ride for the Pony Express. Bronco Charlie's career with them ended after about five months. At that time, the invention of the telegraph made it possible for a message to be sent and received within an instant, compared to days through the Pony Express. Students will want to look up more information about Bronco Charlie after they read about his careers and life. Spanish text. 2006, ediciones Lerner/Lerner Publishing Group, Ages 4 to 8.
