Overview

In his classic song 'Born To Run, ' Bruce Springsteen perfectly captured the restless yearning of adolescence. But it was the angry cry of an unemployed Vietnam veteran that became the heart of his best-selling album, Born in the U.S.A., which sold more than 20 million copies and produced 7 top-10 hits. Springsteen's fans revere him as a powerful and committed performer who, despite his immense fame, never forgot his working-class New Jersey roots.

School Library Journal

Gr 6-8-An honest picture of the ``pop culture legend.'' In clearly written journalistic prose, Frankl candidly describes his subject's working-class background, his conflicts with his father, and his distaste for school. He recounts how Springsteen became interested in music: how it filled the void in his life and became his focus. Early career disappointments and frustrations are chronicled, as are the successes, along with the recording artist's efforts in promoting human rights and the cause of workers. A scanty selection of black-and-white photographs is scattered throughout. Biographies by Peter Gambaccini (Putnam, 1985; o.p.) and Marianne Meyer (Ballantine, 1984) are similiar in scope, but Frankl's book updates the information. A worthwhile addition.-Renee Steinberg, Fieldstone Middle School, Montvale, NJ
