Overview

An American scholar of philosophy and literature, Griffiths now lives in Japan. He offers a broad view of Buddhism, discussing keywords and terminological problems, concepts and methods of comparative analysis, critical questions, authority and canon, Paali Buddhist perspectives on emotion and grief in canonical literature, and ethics. He argues that such issues as rebirth, no-self, and kamma should be viewed metaphorically in relation to this-life, and that their literal ontological construction distracts from the centrality of the noetic Path, the unifying image of the Buddhist cosmopolis. He also considers the relationship between the norm of non-violence and the basic problems of contemporary practical ethics. The text is double spaced. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
