Hirotoshi Morii (Editor) linked the clinical use of vitamin D analogues in bone diseases, Yoshiki Nishizawa (Editor) researched the connection between calcium metabolism and atherosclerosis and Shaul G. Massry (Editor) was the first to systematize the importance of excess PTH in chronic renal failure. Description: This monograph on calcium is intended to bridge various areas in internal medicine using calcium as the common denominator.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an in-depth overview of calcium as it pertains to many physiological and pathophysiological processes in clinical medicine. This somewhat unique theme is interesting and appealing and earns the book a deserved place in the hands of researchers and clinicians, especially since the worthy objective of covering calcium as a common theme in varied medical areas, for the most part, is achieved.
Audience: Although not clearly stated, the book appears to be written for anyone in medicine with an interest in and/or exposure to calcium issues, including physicians in training and support staff such as nurses or dieticians. The authors are a consortium of knowledgeable and qualified physician-scientists well qualified to produce this work.
Features: The book covers various aspects of calcium in medicine, ranging from reviews of normal physiology and metabolism to specific disease entities such as osteoporosis, hypertension or renal insufficiency. This combination of topics provides a useful bridge between in-depth, general basic knowledge and individual clinical issues. At the same time, both the basic chapters as well as the chapters dealing with specific medical conditions can largely stand on their own as helpful and comprehensive reviews. A unique and somewhat questionable feature of the book is the broad attention paid to the field of calcium and dreams in chapter one. Another shortcoming is the fact that no matter how earnestly it is attempted, there is always something lacking in comprehensive reviews. For example, tacrolimus is not mentioned as one of the causes of hypomagnesemia in the chapters on magnesium, an omission of some importance in a book geared to a degree towards nephrologists.
Assessment: The book is of overall good quality and useful for those who have either a need to increase their knowledge or a specific interest in calcium in medicine.
