School Library Journal

Gr 3-6-Basic overviews for novices, written in a clear style that is not oversimplified. Color photographs appear throughout both titles, but some of them are very dark. Camping includes information about gear and clothing, setting up a camp, and handling emergencies. Additional helpful drawings show the various types of tent shapes available. Fishing discusses salt and freshwater varieties of the sport and the equipment they require. Neither title mentions the costs involved. The books will have the most appeal to children interested in participating in these two activities. However, a few chapters have useful report information, such as "Issues Surrounding Fishing" and, in Camping, "Animals and Plants" and "Ecology of the Camp." Other books on these subjects that may pique readers' interest include Victoria Logue's Kids Outdoors: Skills and Knowledge for Outdoor Adventures (McGraw-Hill, 1996) and Steven Griffin's Fishing for Kids: A Family Fishing Guide (NorthWord, 1993).-Diane Olivo-Posner, Long Beach Public Library, CA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
