Capel Sion

Caradoc Evans is perhaps the most controversial writer Wales has ever produced. His first book, My People, met with outrage from the pulpit and the popular press, was banned in Cardiff, but also earned Evans comparison with Zola, Joyce, and Lawrence. In Capel Sion, Evans returned to his themes with relish, attacking the Liberal-Nonconformist heirarchy which, he claimed, ground under its heel the peasantry of west Wales. The response was as it had been for his first book, confirmation that an outstanding author was writing at the height of his powers. Capel Sion was originally published in 1916.
