Children's Literature

This guidebook provides general information about how to provide proper care for a horse. The subjects include choosing a horse, grooming, tack, and more. Many photos and drawings help explain the subjects, including which plants are dangerous to horses and how to use a hoof pick. Question and answer boxes throughout provide information relevant to the particular chapter. Small "horse diary" sections are also included, which look like a handwritten page in a journal and describe an experience of the diary's writer. These, however, add little solid information to the book. The correct and incorrect aspects of horse care have check marks and Xs next to the illustrations, such as how to a blanket should fit a horse. A quiz at the end of the book provides a good way to review the book's information and also lists two places to get more information about horses. A glossary and a thorough index follow the quiz page. Overall, this book is helpful in describing the important ways to take care of a horse, and is appropriate for young people who are new to horses. The information is easy to understand and teaches the responsibility needed when a horse is in one's care. This is part of the "Me and My Horse" series that also includes the title Learning to Ride. 2002, Copper Beech Books,
