Overview
Within an expanding field of study in both undergraduate and graduate nursing curricula, Caring for the Vulnerable explores vulnerability from the perspective of individuals, groups, communities, and populations, and addresses the implication of that vulnerability for nurses, nursing, and nursing care. This new edition presents a basic structure for caring for the vulnerable, and forms a theoretical perspective on caring for doing so within a cultural context, with the ultimate goal of providing culturally competent care. Theoretical and research chapters advance to chapters offering learning experiences for nursing students and practitioners. As nurses are the crucial link between those who are vulnerable, and those with access to solutions, it provides ideas for how nurses might advocate for the vulnerable on a policy level. Written specifically for nurses, by nurses, Caring for the Vulnerable is a timely and necessary response to the culturally diverse vulnerable populations for whom nurses must provide appropriate and precise care.

Purpose: The purpose is to aid nurses and nursing students to accept and better understand the differences in diverse population groups and gain the tools to effectively provide care, advocacy, and empowerment to those most vulnerable.
Audience: Although initially written for undergraduate nursing students, this book is now also widely used by graduate students.
Features: The book's 42 chapters are grouped into seven units on concepts, nursing theories, research, practice, programs, teaching-learning, and policy implications. The basic content has been retained in this edition, but new chapters have been added on different vulnerable groups. Nurse practitioners are highlighted in the teaching-learning and program units, and material has been added on undocumented immigrants, sexual trafficking, and research in global health nursing. Other new material includes nurses in the military, childhood autism, and childhood obesity. A companion website is also available with numerous student and instructor resources.
Assessment: "This is a very comprehensive discussion of vulnerable populations and the work nurses have accomplished with them. It includes information on health disparities in these various groups and programs that are in place to enhance wellness and health. There are few books that can be used for courses detailing the vulnerable and/or underserved. This one can be used in diversity courses as a major textbook or as a supplement to community/public health courses, nursing theory, or research courses. The online supplementary materials add to its value. It is, however, quite pricey at just over $90. "
