Overview

Fifty clinical cases help you excel in biochemistry courses and the USMLE Step 1

The Case Files series is an award-winning learning system proven to improve exam scores. This series helps students to learn in the context of real patients instead of simply memorizing. Case Files: Biochemistry: Second Edition presents 50 clinical cases with open-ended questions which weave basic science concepts into the clinical scenario. Each case includes an extended discussion (including definitions and a pathophysiology discussion), key points, and 3-5 USMLE-style comprehension questions. The authors are experienced teachers from the University of Texas-Houston Medical School in Houston, Texas.

Reviewer: Hazem M. Hallak, PhD (Thomas Jefferson University)
Description: This case-based book is designed to apply the basic sciences to clinical medicine. Each one of the 51 cases includes a clinical problem that introduces a basic science question. The first edition was published in 2005.
Purpose: The basic sciences in general, and biochemistry in particular, are always difficult subjects for medical students to master. This book simplifies biochemistry and makes it more engaging and interesting. Each case study is explained well and includes very detailed answers.
Audience: This would be useful to medical students who are studying for the USMLE Step 1. The 51 cases include high yield concepts tested on the exam, presented in a format that is very easy to understand. The book is written by 17 highly qualified contributors.
Features: Each case includes a clinical problem and the related basic science questions. The answers are organized into four parts, each delineating a clinical and basic science problem, multiple choice questions, and a list of important points addressed by the case. The book is focused, covering all of the important topics likely to be found on the USMLE. It includes the necessary basic science detail while concentrating on the clinically relevant information. Numerous charts and graphs help with visual learning. The authors have done an outstanding job of summarizing and choosing subjects that are important to know for the USMLE Step 1.
Assessment: What separates this book from others is the way it addresses the topics tested on the exam in just enough detail. It engages students eager to apply preclinical concepts to clinical problems. Undoubtedly, this book will help medical students master the connection between biochemistry and the clinical diseases they are likely to encounter on the wards.
