Janet Crane Barley - Children's Literature

Here is a broad look at fortresses, both defensive and decorative. This book in the "Kingfisher Knowledge" series educates readers on the background of defensive constructions and tells some of the dramatic, often tragic experiences of the people who took refuge there. The generously-illustrated book covers castles and forts not only in Europe and North America, but also in Asia, South America, Africa, and Australia, where there was no need for fortifications until the British came in the 19th century. Beginning with the earliest provisions for simple wooden defenses to keep out wild animals and hostile tribes, the book includes a broader-than-expected view of fortifications. It moves through history examining Bronze Age forts, walled fortress towns, the Great Wall of China, Masada, Castel Sant'Angelo (a fort that started as a tomb), Ait Benhaddou, Chateau Gaillard, Krak des Chevaliers, the Alhambra, Himeji Castle, Sacsahuaman, Golconda, Fort Ticonderoga, Fort Sumter, Fort Douamont, Fort Eureka. It even examines romantic castles with no defensive intentions like Neuschwanstein. It concludes with what can be learned from castle ruins and looks at castles of today. The book includes book lists, information about Web sites, and places to explore in an informative summary page at the end of each chapter. It also has a glossary and index. Mr. Adams has written and contributed to more than 50 books on a wide variety of subjects. Professor Rogers teaches at the United States Military Academy at West Point. 2003, Kingfisher/Houghton Mifflin, Ages 9 to Adult.

Gr 5-8-Although similar to the "Eyewitness" books (DK) in layout, these series entries have more text and a cleaner design to provide more in-depth coverage. Adams describes the construction and need for forts in ancient history, the building of the Great Wall of China, the hilltop fortress of Masada, castles throughout Europe and elsewhere, and more modern strongholds. Malam covers Egyptian mummies; the discovery of a variety of preserved bodies throughout history and the world in bogs, deserts, and ice; animal mummies; and mummies today. Both titles include stunning, captioned photos and illustrations that emphasize the many intriguing factual details in the text. Chapters end with a summary, a list of Web and print resources, brief details about careers related to the topic, and organizations to contact. Two colorful and accessible resources.-Susan Shaver, Hemingford Public Schools, NE Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
