School Library Journal

Gr 3-5 An attractive book about a popular topic. With large type and many half-page color photographs and illustrations, the text is surprisingly detailed, especially the section on ``How Castles Were Built.'' However, the section on ``Castles Around the World'' lacks maps and does not provide extensive background information on the castles mentioned. Brochard's Castles of the Middle Ages (Silver Burdett, 1981; o.p.) gives more detailed information on medieval castles. Sancha's The Castle Story (Crowell, 1982), encyclopedic in its depth of coverage, is for a much older audience. Macaulay's Castle (Houghton, 1977) has detailed drawings and informative text showing the planning and construction of a typical 13th-Century castle. Eunice Weech, M. L. King Elementary School, Urbana, Ill.
