Cats also includes Steve Lafreniere's writing on his mother's cat photography, Amber Gayle on brushes with 300-pound mountain lions, Amy Kellner's diatribe on the "Hang in There, Baby" tradition, and a poem from Eileen Myles's pet, Avi.

This dictum, given to the artists and writers who participated in the 2003 Catholic exhibition at Guild & Greyshkul Gallery in New York, produced—beautiful, startling, thought-provoking, sweet, disturbing—results. According to editors/curators Jesse Pearson and Glynnis McDaris, "If they said 'cats are pretty,' that was fine. If they said 'cats are stupid,' that was fine too. This is Catholic in the spirit of its neglected definition: Having varied tastes. This isn't about eating fish on Fridays . . . .

"Call me biased, but I have really outdone myself on this one. I just reached around to pat myself on the back, but I am such a bloated tick of ego and accomplishment that I couldn t reach. I should really say that I have co-outdone myself with this book, though. Glynnis McDaris, a frequent photographic contributor to Vice, and I co-edited Catholic. It s all art and writing about cats. It s basically a luxury object so if you want to accuse me of selling out, go nuts. And yes, I love cats. So heave all the "gaylord" taunts you want at me too. It has photos by Ryan McGinley, Richard Kern, Terry Richardson and guys like that, and then also I interviewed Greg Ginn from Black Flag and SST records about the cat sanctuary that he runs now.
