Remember the cartoon drawings that showed students hiding open comic books between the covers of a Shakespearean play or some other such scholarly reading material? Well, this book is just the opposite of that! Between the lurid covers that show partial skulls and scream True Stories!, there's a wealth of information about the underground world. Death and burial customs are discussed, but so are underground water tables, cave formations, geologic activity, and the unique adaptations made by animals who spend their whole lives underground. Given an encyclopedic title and cover, adolescents might not connect with this book. But advertised as it is, they'll be drawn inside-with unexpected and illuminating results!
