From Barnes & Noble

The Barnes & Noble Review
Unless you’ve got an enterprise network running in your spare bedroom, CCNP Practical Studies: Troubleshooting is the fastest, best way to sharpen your network troubleshooting skills. (Whether or not you’re prepping for Cisco’s CCNP certification.)

This book teaches network troubleshooting through real-world scenarios and more than 50 trouble tickets. (It’s just like work, only without the angry users.) Donna Harrington addresses every area of troubleshooting covered on the CCNP, including IP, IPX, Ethernet, routers, switches, VLANs, IOS, CatOS, frame relay WANs, HDLC, PPP, ISDN, and more.

Even if you don’t have equipment to practice on, Harrington provides all the information you’ll need: diagrams, tables, checklists, detailed IOS outputs, plus protocol analyzer screen captures. All the relevant configuration files and logs can be found on the book’s companion web site, along with some of the utilities Harrington demonstrates.

There’s also a full chapter on Cisco troubleshooting tools and resources -- from simple Show and Ping to CiscoWorks and Cisco’s online help resources. Equally important, Harrington introduces Cisco’s 7-step method for troubleshooting, which is crucial to know for the exam. If you’re an experienced network troubleshooter, you’re probably using an approach that resembles it. If not, you should be. Bill Camarda
