School Library Journal

Gr 6 Up-An introduction to the study of cells and microbes within the parameters of scientific inquiry. A brief but informative chapter on the history of cell experimentation leads into an instructive discussion of the scientific method. The author then outlines several experiments. Each one includes the question to be studied, necessary background information, a materials list, and procedures. Following each activity, several related science-fair projects are suggested. Throughout, safety and attentiveness are emphasized. Basic black-and-white photos and illustrations serve to clarify the material. The general text includes information on acquiring and using the necessary equipment. The appendixes offer illustrated guides to bacteria, fungi, and protists; explain different types of microscopes; and list science supply companies. This is a valuable title for readers serious about science and interested in the study of microorganisms.-Deanna Romriell, Salt Lake City Library, UT Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
