Gr 4-7-- Conord presents a biography of the activist who has dedicated his life to improving the conditions for migrant farm workers. He recounts events in Chavez's childhood that contributed to his advocacy of equality and nonviolence, but the focus here is on his professional life. His story is inextricably tied to the history of the United Farm Workers, which he founded and has led for over two decades. Triumphs and setbacks are briefly, but clearly, described. His effective use of boycotts and fasts are related in a straightforward, restrained manner. A glossary and black-and-white photographs enhance this serviceable overview of the man and his integral role in the farm-labor movement. --Marguerite F.
