Children's Literature -
Chavez and his family were migrant workers, a job that paid low wages and offered little in the way of decent living conditions. After his tour of duty in the Navy, Chavez married and continued to work as a migrant laborer. But now, he had a mission, he wanted better wages and better working conditions. To that end he formed the United Farm Workers union. Through peaceful marches and total commitment, Chavez was able to make a change for the better in the lives of migrant workers. The story is told clearly in simple sentences accompanied by photographs. The black-and-white photos are a bit muddy. Definitions, a short bibliography with Internet sites, and an index round out this interesting mini-biography. Part of the "Famous Americans" series. 1999, Pebble Books/Capstone, Ages 5 to 8, $13.25.
