This story is told by the narrator, Charlotte Glidden. She is the fictitious daughter of an American artist living in Giverny, France in 1893. We read the journal of Charlotte and in doing so we get a biographical portrait of the famous artists of France during this period. Many Americans were there at this time learning to paint like the French masters. Charlotte and her family get an invitation to a Mary Cassett exhibition in Paris, where Charlotte enjoys the many delights of this beautiful city. The book is attractively illustrated with museum reproductions, watercolor paintings, collages, and old postcards, giving the book a realistic and somewhat vintage appearance.
