Overview

For decades F. H. Cardoso has been among the most influential of Latin American scholars, his writings on globalization, dependency, and politics having reached a world-wide audience. This book, the third by Cardoso to appear in English, is the first to incorporate essays written during his tenure as president of Brazil. The transformation of Cardoso's economic and political approach is nowhere better documented than in this broad-ranging collection of writings that span Cardoso's early theoretical work through his pragmatic agenda for Brazil in a rapidly changing world economy. The book also traces the development of one of the world's leading intellectuals, who took theory into the arena of policy when he became head of state.

Not only is Cardoso one of Latin America's most influential social scientists, but since 1994, he has also served as Brazil's president. Font (sociology, Queens College, City College of New York) introduces Cardoso's intellectual trajectory since the 1960s, and collects his views on the making of Brazilian society, dependency, development, authoritarianism, democracy, the relevance of social science, political reform, globalization, and current North-South relations. The extensive bibliography lists most of Cardoso's works, of which this is his third book to appear in English. It is unclear whether this is a translation. Includes photos. Annotation c. Editorials

Choice

This volume should be of particular interest to Latin Americanists and others interested in globalization and particularly its impact on developing nations. Public and academic library collecions, upper-division undergraduate and up.

Foreign Affairs

This fusion of a strong belief in scientifically based academic analysis with political malleability is one of the most fascinating aspects of Cardoso's performance as president.
