Children's Literature - Miriam Chernick

The second in a series, this is the story of Kimi and Hana, sisters living in Japan during feudal times. Disguised as boys at Master Goku's dojo, the sisters plan to one day take revenge on their cruel uncle, who, in book one, ruthlessly murdered their father and brothers, but when their uncle murders Master Goku, the girls must flee the dojo and try to reach their mother and brother before their uncle does. Their journey is action-packed and fast-paced, filled with battles, treachery, ninjas, and the girls' own fears. Some of the battles seem larger than life, but they will keep the young reader turning the pages to find out what happens next. Kimi's character, the voice of the story and the primary decision-maker, is complemented by Hana, the quieter character, whose sixth sense helps save them on several occasions. While leaving some sub-plots unresolved (such as the fate of their friend Tatsuya), the book stands on its own, with the sisters ultimately finding their mother and brother, and escaping with them. With themes relating to family loyalty, bravery, and difficult decisions, this book is a satisfying read. Reviewer: Miriam Chernick
