Each book in the "Books for Young Learners" series is keyed to Emergent, Early, or Fluent readers, a scale which spans K-2 readers. In addition, the key indicates supported (S), guided (G), or independent (I) for each of these stages. Natural word choice and pictures work closely to support new and young readers in practicing skills with an adult or independently. This selection, keyed to the middle range of early reading skill, shows close-up various kinds of chickens, both roosters and hens, looking for food in snow and grass. It features one or two lines of text per page. Three smaller photos show close-up what grains chickens eat and the small joke at the end asks, "what's for dessert?" as a chicken pulls up a fat worm from the turf.
