Description: This third edition provides a needed update of a major textbook in child and adolescent psychiatry. It is a superb and comprehensive reference text that provides a huge amount of information in a very clear manner.
Purpose: This book succeeds in covering the entire field of child and adolescent psychiatry with emphasis on the clinical syndromes encountered in this patient population. The reader could use it as a major personal learning tool, as a textbook for a course in psychopathology, or as a source of specific information. Although it is a huge book, each chapter is well organized, and subheadings make it reasonably easy to find specific information within the mass of text.
Audience: This book would be of use to residents in child and adolescent psychiatry, practicing clinicians or researchers, or persons preparing for the child psychiatry board exam.
Features: This book provides a great deal of information and a large number of references. The charts are very useful, especially those dealing with differential diagnoses.
Assessment: This is a major, comprehensive textbook that provides very up-to-date information on the rapidly expanding field of child psychiatry, and the new edition appears to be a major rewrite rather than a minor revision. The editor is one of the most prominent persons in the field, and the chapter authors are likewise notable authorities, mostly from the U.K. but also from the U.S. The book emphasizes the clinical syndromes encountered in child psychiatry, but also includes sections on assessment and treatment. It is a book well worth owning, to which one could refer frequently.
