Gr 2-4-- Typical of the series, Jacobsen's information is organized into one-to-three page chapters on the geography, the people, ancient and modern history, independence, wars, and contemporary daily life. Each page is illustrated with one or more full-color photographs; the type is large for easy reading. One map shows the physical characteristics of the country; another places it in its continental context. Jacobsen succeeds in giving readers a sense of life in Chile. She does not ignore the realities of the political struggles of the people; she includes a brief account of the violent 1973 coup.
