School Library Journal

Gr 4-5-- A poorly organized book, but one with a controlled vocabulary and detailed black-and-white line drawings that are excellent in conveying feelings all people have when they are hot and cold. Covered are the sensation of wind, the influence of ice cubes on fluids and their containers, the history of refrigeration, and the discovery of woolly mammoths frozen solid for centuries. There is a superb section on the effects of freon on the earth's atmosphere. Some easy experiments involving wet fingers and blowing air, air escaping from balloons, etc. are included. There are some oversimplifications, however, and the text has a bit of a ``gee whiz'' style. --Elizabeth Morrissett, Alaska State Library, Juneau
