Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

The front endpapers have a map of the world with the outline of China marked. It is clear that China is a very large country, and it has a long and rich past. As one might expect in such a vast country, the terrain varies considerably, and most people live in the fertile land to the east and south. A map shows the major cities and general characteristics of the land. There were hundreds of emperors during China's history, but only one was a woman. China was one of the first countries to have a civil service where exams were required in order to become a government official. The Great Wall, started more than 2,000 years ago to keep out invading armies still exists, and several years ago, I had the good fortune to visit it in person. Brief introductions to Chinese art, calligraphy, religion, trade, the Communist Revolution, and China today fill the remaining spreads. There is no real depth, but the book does a nice job introducing and demonstrating the progression of China from an ancient feudal society to a modern country actively engaged in today's world.
