Chinese Brush Painting

Step by Step

By Kwan Jung

Sumi-E, or Chinese brush painting, is admired and emulated by artists the world over. This beautiful and inspiring book shows painters of all interests and skill levels how to achieve the fluid, spontaneous style of this unique art form.

Through 12 step-by-step projects, readers will learn how to paint a range of popular subjects using traditional Chinese inks, brushes and papers. Projects gradually increase in difficulty, and feature such subjects as swallows, bamboo, wild orchids, plum blossoms, pandas, horses, peonies and more.

An introductory chapter explains the traditional materials used with this style of painting, its subjects and its composition. There is also an in-depth section on technique that covers everything from holding brushes to mastering brush strokes.

Kwan Jung is an accomplished artist and instructor who has achieved the honored status of "Academician" by the National Academy. In addition, his work has won numerous awards and is represented in a number of public and private collections. He lives in San Diego, California.

Chinese painting originated as calligraphy 6000 years ago. The first ink painting on silk dates to about 200 B.C.E. In the 12th and 13th centuries C.E., the emphasis shifted to spontaneous brushwork and direct emotional response to nature. At the same time, Zen Buddhist monks took the art to Japan and other parts of Asia. An acclaimed Chinese American artist, Jung offers 12 step-by-step projects in gradually increasing difficulty, covering subjects like swallows, bamboo, wild orchids, plum blossoms, grape leaves, and mandarin ducks. Though somewhat weak on text, this is one of the better books on Chinese painting for beginners. For instruction with a more comprehensive understanding of both the spiritual and the technical aspects of the art form, see Wang Jia Nan and Cai Xiaoli's Oriental Painting Course.
