Overview
A major work of scholarship of outstanding importance. The text is clear, well-organized, and well-translated. The first volume of what will undoubtedly become a standard history of the Church.Editorials
Library Journal
Originally issued in German in ten volumes (as Handbuch der Kirchengeschichte ), and in English from 1965 to 1981, this landmark work by eminent Roman Catholic scholars was then highly praised as a benchmark achievement. Monumental in scope, the three-volume version has been abridged with minimal text reduction and elimination of the original's extensive footnotes, indexes, and bibliographies. The narrative is compact, readable, and ecumenical in tone; chapter headings should provide adequate subject access for general usage in the absence of indexing. Editor Jedin (d.1980), a respected University of Bonn professor and Vatican II peritus , was better known in Europe and Latin America than in English-speaking countries. Maintaining good rapport with Protestant scholars, he viewed the sweep of church history as the history of salvation. This unique and standard set is now within the reach of parishes, schools, and the libraries of an educated public. Highly recommended.-- Anna Donnelly, St. John's Univ. Lib., New YorkBook Details
