The seemingly charmed life of this young singer had obstacles that might have stopped a less driven dreamer. Born in 1980 to an Irish-American mother and an Ecuadorian father who was a U.S. army sergeant, the child Christina moved from New York to Texas to New Jersey to Japan. The "little girl with the big voice" was tormented by her classmates, who were jealous of her talents. There was abuse in the household, and Christina's parents were divorced when she was five. At age eight she was a Star Search contestant. At twelve she became a Mouseketeer on The New Mickey Mouse Club. Her rendition of "Reflections" for the Disney movie, Mulan, received a nomination for a Golden Globe Award. At eighteen she had two hit singles followed by a platinum album. At nineteen she won a Grammy for Best New Artist. In 2000 she sang in the Super Bowl half-time show with Enrique Iglesias and performed for President Clinton on TV. Her recent project is a Spanish album. She is considering making movies and going to college. She has time—she is only 20 years old.
