A favorite character comes alive in 3-D in Cinderella: A Pop-Up Fairy Tale by Matthew Reinhart, as castles, gowns and silver pumpkin carriages burst from the pages and characters literally transform before readers' eyes. When the clock strikes 12, Cinderella folds from riches back to rags. In addition to the center fold-outs on each main page, miniature pop-up booklets are placed at the bottom corner of each page featuring more 3-D scenes, such as a rat folding out into a footman, and the climactic fitting of the glass slipper. Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

Reinhart retells the fairy tale as I remember it from my childhood in this splendid pop-up. As a student of Robert Sabuda, you can clearly see the influence of the pop-up master—especially the pop-ups-within pop-ups on a page or spread. These combinations make this story a delight. The art is not quite as exciting as one would find in a Sabuda book, but the pop-ups are on par. The opening scene of Cinderella's cottage, a later one of the beautiful coach with its horses as she sets out for the ball, and the final scene with the pop-up castle are particularly engaging. For young girls who love this fairy tale or who may be hearing or reading it for the first time, this book will be a joy.

Kirkus Reviews

Poor Cinderella. Her story always begins so poignantly that even Reinhart's extravagant colorful pop-up scenarios can't quite cheer things up-until the fairy godmother arrives, of course. The first spread gives rise to a quaint three-dimensional homestead, windows revealing Cinderella's cruel stepmother and her two nasty stepsisters. Where is Cinderella? Readers must open one of the many small pop-up-books-within-a-pop-up-book to see her descending head-first from the chimney (that she's cleaning, of course). Cinderella's fairy godmother soon pops up, literally, sporting pink acetate wings. She sees to it that the beautiful servant girl makes it to the prince's ball, first turning a pumpkin into a stagecoach made from positively prismatic metallic paper. A fat black rat transforms into a jolly coachman with the turn of a page and Cinderella in her fancy gown (with real ribbon) sprouts up like a giant mushroom. Wonderful, glittery, shiny pop-up surprises abound as corset strings are pulled, dancers twirl and castles loom. Reinhart's retelling is solid from start to happily-ever-after finish. (Pop-up book. 4-8)
