K-Gr 6-- A unique celebration of the circus that combines brilliant reproductions of famous paintings (Matisse, Chagall, Renoir, Picasso) with stunning photographs of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circuses (including some by Jill Krementz) with original poems by Sullivan. His simple verses radiate his excitement over the mystery and thrills of the big top and provide a fitting complement to the artwork; diverse paintings delight and stretch the imagination, while the full-color photographs are so vivid that readers will feel as though they can step into them. It's a neat idea, but the quality of the poetry is uneven. A thematic introduction to the world of the circus through fine art. --Barbara Peklo Abrahams, Oneida City Schools, Manlius, NY
