This book explains what it means to be a citizen as well as how one becomes a citizen of the United States. Sentences are simple and easy to understand. Attractive, large, color photographs portray citizens and citizens-to-be of many different cultural backgrounds; however, there are no pictures of people with disabilities. There is an easy to follow eight-panel flow chart in the back of the book reviewing the steps to American citizenship. There are a few citizenship facts at the back of the book as well as a glossary (including the terms citizen, community, laws, responsibilities, and vote) and an index. This is an uncomplicated introduction to one aspect of American government for children in grades kindergarten through second. This book is the first in a series of six. The books in the series all work together to reinforce ideas and terminology that might be new to younger readers and learners.
