Synopsis

From the Preface by the This manual is intended for teachers who have chosen to use CLASSIC SHORT FICTION in their classrooms. I have tried in the brief essays that follow to suggest ways to introduce to students each of the stories in the anthology. These commentaries, like the questions that follow each story, are intended to promote independent thought and class discussion. While I hope that what I have to say will be persuasive, I recognize that the entire critical enterprise goes forward by reasoned disagreement. I will in time disagree with some of my own juegments expressed in these pages, and my essays will have served their purpose if they provoke debate. Mindful as well that textbook questions occasionally baffle both students and their instructors, I have in most cases focused my discussions on the study questions that follow the stories. . . .
