Overview

Revising his 2003 doctoral dissertation for the University of Edinburgh, Zhao (languages and cultures, U. of Otago, New Zealand) uses the theoretical framework designed by Vladimir Propp to present a synchronic picture of the structural features of classical Chinese fiction of the strange and supernatural. Such literature has been around since the Warring States Period (475-221 BC) is recognized as the earliest and most prolific form of classical Chinese fiction, and has been widely studied both in China and the West during the 20th century, but he believes that this first systematic account of its morphological features can help reveal the textual patterns of the genre.
