Overview
The second edition of Cleft Lip and Palate: Diagnosis and Management is an unparalleled review of treatment concepts in all areas of cleft involvement presented by an international team of experienced clinicians. This text can never be duplicated since it largely consists of longitudinal facial and palatal growth studies of dental casts, photographs, panorexes and cephalographs from birth to adolescence. Throughout all growth and treatment concepts, the need for differential diagnosis in treatment planning has been underscored. The underlying argument is that all of the treatment goals - good speech, facial aesthetics and dental occlusion - may be realized without the need to sacrifice one for the other. Every chapter author's concepts arose from extensive experience subjected to testing. Emphasis is placed on the essential character of multicenter clinical studies for improving understanding of the natural history of the cleft defect and the face in which it is found.

Description:The editor intends to present opinions of the various professionals involved in the treatment of the individual with cleft palate. Each medical/dental discipline involved with the cleft palate patient has its own concerns regarding treatment. In this book, the editor successfully introduces these philosophies and arranges them into a common treatment goal. This second edition, coming nine years after the first edition, retains some original authors while including some additional authorities.
Purpose:Treatment of the cleft palate individual can be complex, mainly because so many different medical and dental specialties can be involved. Agreement among these various disciplines and their orchestration into a coherent and uniform treatment plan can be challenging. The editor has been involved, almost exclusively, with the cleft palate patient since 1959 and has learned the intricacies of the cleft palate team approach. In this book, he has successfully combined his experience with the experience of other recognized experts.
Audience:A host of various medical and dental practitioners, as well as audiologists and speech therapists are involved in treatment of these patients. This book successfully presents each group's concerns and makes conclusions regarding treatment based on each group's philosophy. Therefore, it would behoove the care providers in all these disciplines to read this book.
Features:This book covers in detail the treatment concepts for the cleft palate patient and supports these concepts with in-depth case analyses. Itbegins with facial embryology and the various types of clefts and continues with extensive sections on surgery, facial orthopedics, midfacial growth and development, and speech. Substantial black-and-white and color photographs are included in each chapter.
Assessment:This is a valuable addition to the library of any practitioner involved in the treatment of the cleft palate patient.
