Overview

Scientists have been warning the world about global warming for almost three decade. But the rest of us are only now starting to get the message. The planet is warming at an unusually rapid rate, and this warming is largely being caused by human activity. Shrinking glaciers, thawing permafrost , erratic weather and threatened freshwater supplies are already affecting the lives of people around the globe, and the worst is still to come. The crisis is real, but there is little concensus about how to confront the problem, not only because the science is complex, but because the economic, political and social implications of taking action are vast, far-reaching and unsettling.

This concise and straightforward book addresses the main questions. What is happening, and how did we get here? What is the basic science behind climate change? What is going to happen in the future? And, most important, why is it so hard for us to accept what is going on, and what can we do about it? The groundwork guides provide an overview of key contemporary political and social issues. Engaging, concise and clearly written, these books tackle pressing and sometimes controversial topics, offering both a lively introduction to the subject and a strong point of view.

Children's Literature - Hazel Buys

The rate at which our worldwide climate is changing accelerates annually. Life as we know it is spinning into oblivion. The evidence for this situation is documented persuasively in records of temperature change and levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Answers to core questions about how we got to this point and what the future may hold are advanced in this guide which is part of the "Groundwork Guide Series," and discusses the mechanics of how our climate works, the far-reaching effects of change and what is required to address this complex dilemma. Political, social, and economic agendas and their impact, both good and bad, frame the essential questions of survival facing our planet. The point of view is assertive, the facts comprehensive and the analysis compelling. This book is a valuable resource for research into any aspect of the conundrum of climate change and would be an important addition to a classroom studying science, politics, economics and/or sociology.

Gr 7 Up-These handy volumes address current topics that can be debated in government, history, and science classes. The first chapter frames the question and the remaining ones provide historical background, explanations, and possible solutions (note in Genocide that Wounded Knee took place in 1890, not 1891). The authors express strong viewpoints that are sure to jolt readers into ready agreement or opposition. Springer begins with "Today's Genocide" and a summary of what is happening in Darfur. Tanaka argues that global warming is affecting people across the globe, with worse yet to come. These concise, straightforward titles are important additions to all collections.-Patricia Ann Owens, Wabash Valley College, Mt. Carmel, IL Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
