Purpose:Although not stated specifically, the book provides respiratory therapists and other healthcare professionals an updated reference with new innovations, ever-changing techniques, and clinical applications of mechanical ventilation. This third edition meets these objectives.
Audience:Although the author does not directly note the target audience, it is clearly intended for respiratory therapists, students of respiratory care programs, physicians, and other health care professionals who directly work with mechanical ventilation. The author is clearly an expert.
Features:This is an exhaustive book covering not only initiation, management, and weaning of mechanical ventilation but also airways, airway management, hemodynamic monitoring, pharmacotherapies, and procedures associated to mechanical ventilation. Included is a section on neonatal ventilation and home mechanical ventilation. Each of the chapters begins with an outline followed by key terms and an introduction. The book brilliantly contains a margin alongside the text where key terms and other new terms are defined. Tables, pictures, and graphs further illustrate key concepts. Each chapter concludes with a summary, a series of self-assessment questions and answers to assess reader mastery of chapter material and a lengthy list of references. The final chapter consists of 15 case studies. The book concludes with nine appendixes consisting of pertinent references, such as respiratory care calculations, hemodynamic values, and the Apache II severity of disease classification system. The index is well done.
Assessment:This is an outstanding updated book on mechanical ventilation. It is so well done, that it is hoped the author continues writing future editions as new technology and techniques in mechanical ventilation evolve and emerge. This is a must-have resource for respiratory therapists as well as residents in the intensive care arena. It is also a highly recommended textbook for all respiratory therapy programs.
