From The Critics
Reviewer: Denise R. Massaro, RN, BSN(Visiting Nurse Service of New York)Description: This book clearly illustrates how nurses can use aromatherapy to enhance the clinical environment and improve patient care and outcomes.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide nurses with a clear clinical focus regarding aromatherapy and to present it from a nursing perspective. It allows the nurse or student nurse to establish a solid and broad foundation of knowledge regarding the specific uses of essential oils and their effects on various disease states. It is not a how-to guide, nor a substitute for formal training, which the author highly urges. Specific essential oil formulas and exact methods are intentionally omitted.
Audience: Although primarily written for nurses and student nurses who are providing direct patient care in a hospital setting, those working in a variety of specialty areas can also benefit from the in-depth information presented. The author is credible and well versed on the subject.
Features: The overall appearance of the book is appealing. The black-and-white illustrations, primarily charts and graphs, are clear and concise. The references are both current and pertinent. Some unique features include information on training and accreditation in both the U.S. and the U.K., professional aromatherapy organizations, and author recommended essential oil distributors.
Assessment: This book is excellently written and covers a multitude of possible clinical applications of aromatherapy by nurses. It is thorough in its scope, spanning the chemistry and manufacture of essential oils to storage, contraindications, and specific disease processes and specialty areas where essential oils can be used. It is highly useful to nurses wishing to incorporate aromatherapy into their practice. It is recommended to nursing school libraries, bookstores, and individuals.
