Description: This book provides valuable information on theoretical, diagnostic, and therapeutic classification of sensorimotor speech disorders. In addition, the last 46 chapters are filled with the information of various pathologies that cause or are accompanied by sensorimotor speech disorders. The first edition was published in 1997.
Purpose: The purpose is to "provide an advanced understanding of the nature, assessment, and management of sensorimotor speech disorders for the improved care of individuals with these disorders."
Audience: "The book was written for speech language pathologists, physicians, and other healthcare providers and is updated to provide more references for various pathologies associated with sensorimotor speech disorders. Each chapter is written by internationally recognized professionals. "
Features: The first chapter begins the book with a theoretical explanation of speech sensorimotor control and related disorders. Several chapters discuss perceptual, nonspeech dynamic, acoustic, kinematic, and electromyographic assessment of sensorimotor speech disorders. These chapters include diverse strategies and tactics for assessment. Other chapters discuss definitions, clinical characteristics, assessment, and possible treatments of seven different types of motor speech disorders. These chapters provide the basic neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and rationales for possible treatments. In addition, the author adds two valuable chapters to this second edition, presenting information on neurogenic stuttering and useful principles of treatment for sensorimotor speech disorders.
