Overview

Bringing together the expertise of leading research practitioners in the field, the second edition of Clinical Management of Sensorimotor Speech Disorders is an up-to-date reference for the underlying theory and the basic principles of assessment and treatment. This book provides a solid foundation in the conceptual framework essential for classifying and differentiating disorders according to clinical categories. It covers the theory underlying measurement strategies including acoustic, kinematic, aerodynamic, and electromyographic techniques, and guides the reader through treatments for each disorder. New in this edition is a comprehensive section with in-depth coverage of the diseases, syndromes, and pathologic conditions which are accompanied by sensorimotor speech disorders. These chapters provide concise descriptions of the disease and its signs and symptoms, neuropathology, epidemiology, and etiology. Each chapter goes on to present the speech impairment associated with the disorder and its signs and symptoms, etiology, neuropathology, associated cognitive, linguistic, and communicative signs and symptoms, special diagnostic considerations, treatment, and key references.Features:
  • Clear articulation of theoretical issues provides a strong foundation for the clinical management of the dysarthrias, apraxia, and speech problems secondary to hearing loss
  • New chapter on neurogenic fluency disorders
  • Extensive discussion of neuropathologic conditions that cause sensorimotor speech disorders
  • Authoritative and comprehensive, this expanded edition will prove to be the reference of choice for students in speech-language pathology programs as well as clinicians and researchers.

"...organized by syndrome, the text covers differential diagnosis, clinical assessment, and clinical management."

From The Critics

Reviewer: In-sop Kim, Ph.D(Illinois State University)
Description: This book provides valuable information on theoretical, diagnostic, and therapeutic classification of sensorimotor speech disorders. In addition, the last 46 chapters are filled with the information of various pathologies that cause or are accompanied by sensorimotor speech disorders. The first edition was published in 1997.
Purpose: The purpose is to "provide an advanced understanding of the nature, assessment, and management of sensorimotor speech disorders for the improved care of individuals with these disorders."
Audience: "The book was written for speech language pathologists, physicians, and other healthcare providers and is updated to provide more references for various pathologies associated with sensorimotor speech disorders. Each chapter is written by internationally recognized professionals. "
Features: The first chapter begins the book with a theoretical explanation of speech sensorimotor control and related disorders. Several chapters discuss perceptual, nonspeech dynamic, acoustic, kinematic, and electromyographic assessment of sensorimotor speech disorders. These chapters include diverse strategies and tactics for assessment. Other chapters discuss definitions, clinical characteristics, assessment, and possible treatments of seven different types of motor speech disorders. These chapters provide the basic neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and rationales for possible treatments. In addition, the author adds two valuable chapters to this second edition, presenting information on neurogenic stuttering and useful principles of treatment for sensorimotor speech disorders. The remaining 46 chapters are very unique, discussing various pathologies associated with sensorimotor speech disorders. Each chapter provides definitions, diagnostic signs and symptoms, neuropathology, epidemiology, cognitive, linguistic, and the communicative signs and speech impairments associated with the disorders and syndromes.
Assessment: This excellent book has valuable scientific information. It is a useful reference for both clinical work and research in the area of sensorimotor speech disorders.
