Description:This book is focused on the practical and clinical skills necessary to become a certified athletic trainer by passing the national certification exam. Each skill is broken down into specific tasks with a score sheet and evaluation tool that allows the student to see which skills have and have not been mastered. The previous edition was published in 2002.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide athletic training students and athletic training educators with a reference that focuses on clinical skills and proficiencies. This book provides students with concrete information for mastering the practical skills necessary for an athletic training professional. The breakdown of skills into tasks allows for a greater understanding of each. The book meets the author's objectives.
Audience:The book is written with both the athletic training student and the athletic training educator in mind, according to the author. As an educator, I find this book beneficial as a psychomotor tool, as well as a learning over time evaluative tool. The authors have significant credibility in the field, having served as educators for many years. Dr. Amato was recently recognized as an athletic training educator of the year by the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA.
Features:The book is based on the 5th Role Delineation Study and contains the competencies required by athletic training students to sit for the BOC exam. Each domain area is included with skills that fulfill mastery of that domain. The clinical skill assessments are broken down into five sections: an introduction of the skill, a score sheet of the specific tasks that comprise the skill, an evaluation, a scale of skill mastery, and information and supplies needed to demonstrate the skill. An assessment provides three opportunities for demonstration, allowing for documentation of Learning Over Time. It allows for a student to practice with supervision from an instructor, as well as practice with peers. This is the most practical book I have seen that provides the breakdown of skills and the number of assessments, as most books are more focused on the written portion of the BOC examination. Although the practical section of the BOC examination will be obsolete by June 2007, these skills are still necessary in the profession and this book can and should be used in the classroom for skill mastery.
Assessment:For the educator who wants to provide a rigorous learning environment and for the student who wants concrete evidence of skill mastery, this book fulfills both. Updated to include changes to the recent BOC Role Delineation Study, the focus on hands-on, Learning Over Time is seen in this book. This book focuses on the clinical skills necessary for athletic trainers and allows for task mastery.
