Overview

Many supervisors lack clear direction regarding the desired structure, focus and outcome of a supervision session. The author suggests helpful qualities/habits to be developed and tasks to be addressed to run a session effectively. This book covers useful skills as well as an extensive tool kit - methods that may be used via scenarios, case studies and examples taken from the professions at which the book is aimed.

Synopsis

Drawing on her own experiences in giving, receiving, and teaching supervision, Ooijen (University of Wales College, UK) offers a guide to conducting a supervision session from beginning to end, irrespective of the supervisor's professional group or theoretical orientation. She discusses her three-step method in a conversational style, with examples and suggestions. Annotation ©2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Description:This book covers clinical supervision, with an emphasis on the 3-Step method, which is not tied to any theoretical construct but can adapt to different philosophical beliefs.
Purpose:According to the author, "my purpose in writing this book is to clarify and simplify both the structure and process of clinical supervision." She adds, "The main focus of the book is the 3-Step method for conducting a supervision session." Lastly, the author states, "This book is intended to be a practical guide to supervision, which is why I have kept theoretical discussion to a minimum." These worthy objectives are met in this book.
Audience:According to the author, the book is aimed at "those people who have not yet had much experience as a supervisor, although more seasoned supervisors as well as people involved in the training and development of supervisors may also find it useful." I agree, and I think graduate students in clinical psychology would benefit greatly from this book because it is a very practical guide. The author is a credible authority in the subject matter of the book.
Features:The book focuses on the 3-Step method of supervision and emphasizes it throughout the chapters. It is a step-by-step approach, a practical guide to learning how to supervise. The 3-step method is applied to both individual and group supervision. This book challenges you to really think about your work as a supervisor. The author spells out the issues quite nicely. She is passionate but not dogmatic in her writing style. Many examples are used to clearly illustrate the concepts.
Assessment:I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a wonderful book for trainees who will be providing supervision for others in the future. The American Psychological Association (APA) has highly encouraged that supervision issues be taught at accredited internship sites and this book would serve as a wonderful reference guide. It is practical and thought-provoking, and the case examples are poignant and serve as wonderful teaching tools.
