Overview
The fourth edition of Clinical Voice Disorders is an up-to-date, practical reference for the management of voice disorders caused by structural and neurologic etiologies, as well as psychogenic disorders. The book provides a solid foundation for understanding the relationship between biology and clinical assessment; how neuromechanism relates to disorders; and the complex nature of behavioral voice disorders and treatment. An expanded collection of clinical case studies provides the valuable opportunity to work through real-life examples of frequently encountered problems. New to this edition is a DVD-ROM with videos that provide a window into clinical interviewing, enabling viewers to observe Dr. Aronson’s techniques and approaches to therapy. Additional chapters on the DVD-ROM present the evolution and embryology of the larynx and respiratory system, covering vital respiration, respiration for speech, and the anatomy and physiology of phonation. Demonstrations of vocal fold vibratory patterns, stroboscopic examples of various pathologies, and audio samples of dysarthric voices enable clinicians to apply concepts presented in the text. Highlights:-Detailed presentation of the voice examination-Evidence-based approaches that guide the reader through decision making and to the confident selection of treatments and therapies-New chapter presenting the special considerations for treating the professional singer-In-depth coverage of the laryngeal and respiratory anatomy and physiology—topics frequently omitted in textbooks on voice disorders-Nearly 200 photographs and illustrations demonstrating key conceptsIdeal for students in graduate-level speech–language pathology programs and clinicians treating patients with voice disorders, this multimedia resource is indispensable for mastering the philosophy and clinical management for the full range of clinical voice pathologies.A & P of phonation/normal voice dev./organic voice disorders/psychogenic voice disorders/clinical exam/etc.

Thorough coverage of phonatony, resonatory, and respiratory disorders--excluding the diagnosis and treatment of singers and actors whose voices have become abnormal and who need instruction on using their voices with optimum efficiency. Readership goes beyond the student and clinician in speech pathology, reflecting the interconnectedness of abnormal voice and illness, and speech pathology and otolaryngology, as well as other medical specialties. Covers anatomy and physiology, organic and psychogenic disorders, clinical examination, psychologic interviewing, and therapy. Annotation c. Reviewer: Adrienne B. Hancock, PhD(George Washington University)Description: Voice development, structure, and physiology are explored in depth and in the context of diagnosing clinical voice disorders in this book. Treatments are also presented, but to a much lesser extent. Excellent videos and additional chapters are included on a DVD that accompanies the book.
Purpose: The authors prepare readers to diagnose and treat voice disorders with a comprehensive foundation in anatomy and physiology, neurology, and psychology pertinent to the voice. They accomplish this by presenting a broad scope of voice disorders and supplementing the text with illustrations and audio-video samples.
Audience: This book is directed at students, probably at the Masters level. Some of the chapters (e.g., embryology) could serve students with a desire to specialize in voice, but probably wouldn't be assigned reading in a typical voice disorders graduate course. The authors are certainly knowledgeable and experienced, and have much to offer.
Features: Diagnostics are particularly well covered. From anatomy and physiology to acoustics and air flow, readers will be well informed and know how to test a clinical hypothesis! The DVD provides many case examples excellent for perceptual practice and training the clinician's observation skills. I would be remiss if I did not point out Aronson's dysarthria differential diagnosis segment on the DVD — FANTASTIC! The illustrations are very clear and useful (some in color). I would like to have seen more treatment approaches or facilitating techniques, but the treatments that are included are explained with a case study and sometimes a video demonstration.
Assessment: In comparison to other books on voice, this one seems to have more detail about resonance disorders and psychogenic disorders.
