Overview

In Ancient Egypt, (c. 2500-332 B.C.), craftsmen worked with glass, stone, and precious metals to produce pendants, jars, masks, and other items of extraordinary beauty. Egyptians built magnificent palaces and tombs for their rulers and decorated the walls with detailed scenes of everyday life that, preserved by darkness and the dry. climate, tell us much about the people and their customs. Scribes writing on parchment made from the papyrus that grew beside the Nile River have also left us a pictorial narrative. The belief that people journeyed to the afterlife resulted in the preservation of clothes, jewels, cooking pots, and other items that have helped archaeologists piece together the fascinating life of Ancient Egypt.

Describes the clothing and crafts of the people who lived in the valley of the Nile River and includes information about their daily lives and festivals.

Imagine attending a banquet in ancient Egypt and placing a cake of scented wax on your head. By the end of the evening the wax would have melted, leaving a delightful fragrance. Unfortunately, the colored wax stained clothes and Egyptians loved clean clothes. Men held important jobs, such as Royal Chief Washer or Royal Chief Bleacher, and some ancient laundry lists have survived, giving us insight into the type of clothing worn by the wealthy. Most clothing was made from flax and accessories were important. Egyptians were skilled at working with glass, metals, stone and wood. They made a type of paper called papyrus and left many details of their society in hieroglyphic writing. We learn much more about this ancient civilization through craft items, paintings, pottery and sculpture. Dozens of excellent photographs of these artifacts are included in this source. As part of the "Clothes and Crafts in History" series, each book features objects, jewelry and festivals of six different eras. The text is brief but informative. A glossary, index and craft activities make it handy for a social studies program. 2000 (orig. 1998), Gareth Stevens, $21.27. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Laura Hummel
