Overview

This is the fully revised and updated second edition of the very sucessful introductory textbook on cognitive neuroscience. Written by two leading experts in the field, this book takes a unique thematic approach to introduce concepts of cognitive neurosciences, guiding students along a clear path to understand the latest findings whether or not they have a background in neuroscience. New to this edition are Frontiers in Cognitive Neuroscience text boxes; each one focuses on a leading researcher and their topic of expertise. There is a new chapter on Genes and Molecules of Cognition, and all other chapters have been thoroughly revised, based on the most recent discoveries.

  • New edition of a very successful textbook
  • Completely revised to reflect new advances, and feedback from adopters and students
  • Includes a new chapter on Genes and Molecules of Cognition
  • Student Solutions available at http://www.baars-gage.com/

For Teachers:

  • Rapid adoption and course preparation: A wide array of instructor support materials are available online including PowerPoint lecture slides, a test bank with answers, and eFlashcords on key concepts for each chapter.
  • A textbook with an easy-to-understand thematic approach: in a way that is clear for students from a variety of academic backgrounds, the text introduces concepts such as working memory, selective attention, and social cognition.
  • A step-by-step guide for introducing students to brain anatomy: color graphics have been carefully selected to illustrate all points and the research explained. Beautifully clear artist's drawings are used to 'build a brain' from top to bottom, simplifying the layout of the brain.

For students:

  • An easy-to-read, complete introduction to mind-brain science: all chapters begin from mind-brain functions and build a coherent picture of their brain basis. A single, widely accepted functional framework is used to capture the major phenomena.
  • Learning Aids include a student support site with study guides and exercises, a new Mini-Atlas of the Brain and a full Glossary of technical terms and their definitions.
  • Richly illustrated with hundreds of carefully selected color graphics to enhance understanding.

Synopsis

Written by two leading experts in the field, this fully updated textbook takes a unique approach to introducing concepts of cognitive neurosciences. Many educational fields now require a basic understanding of cognitive neuroscience but other textbooks on the market are written for biology audiences, rather than for psychology and related majors. This text takes a thematic approach that is clear and understandable to those with or without a background in biology or neuroscience. New to this edition are Frontiers in Cognitive Neuroscience text boxes; each one focuses on a leading researcher and their topic of expertise. There is a new chapter on Genes and Molecules of Cognition, and all other chapters have been thoroughly revised, based on the most recent discoveries. New material has been added on the latest advances in brain imaging.

For teachers:

  • A new Mini-Atlas of the Brain provides the instructor with a simplified way to introduce the topographical features of brain anatomy and the basic terms that are used in navigating around the brain
  • Rapid adoption and course preparation: the instructor support website provides a wide array of teaching materials, so that once adopted instructors can quickly and easily be ready for class:

    • PowerPoint lecture slides for each chapter, including hyperlinks to relevant websites and other supporting materials
    • A test bank with multiple choice and short answer questions
    • Flashcards on key concepts for each chapter for use in lectures or as student study guides
    • Links to a wealth of related multimedia information and websites

For students:

  • Beautiful brain figures and well-articulated legends: Illustrated in full color throughout, and including figures from contemporary journal publications presented with simplified legends so that students may grasp the complex results and theoretical interpretations quickly and easily

  • An easy-to-read and complete introduction to mind-brain science: All chapters begin from easy-to-understand mind-brain functions, and build a coherent picture of their brain basis across chapters
  • A full Glossary of technical terms and their definitions
  • A student companion website with additional study guides, questions, and exercises

Reviewer:Michael Joel Schrift, D.O., M.A.(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description:This is an outstanding comprehensive new introductory textbook on cognitive neuroscience. Written and edited by internationally recognized scientist-educators, it would serve as an excellent accompaniment to an undergraduate course on the brain and behavior.
Purpose:As noted by the editors, cognitive neuroscience has become a basic prerequisite for study in psychology, biology, education, and medicine and it has been difficult to cover the needed material in a single course. This book attempts to solve that problem by synthesizing the material into a functional framework that helps to organize the knowledge around familiar domains, such as sensory perception in vision and audition. The editors and authors have produced an extremely useful textbook.
Audience:It is intended for undergraduate psychology, premedical, education, and neuroscience students.
Features:All the major areas are covered including mind and brain; neurons and their connections; brain imaging; neuroanatomy; vision; hearing and speech; attention and consciousness; learning and memory; thinking and problem solving; language; goals, executive control, and action; emotion; social cognition; and development. Appendix A reviews the concept of neural models and Appendix B covers methods for studying brain and behavior. The reference section is comprehensive with pertinent and contemporary citations of the relevant scientific literature. The illustrations and images are outstanding and great learning tools.
Assessment:This is a wonderful introductory cognitive neuroscience textbook that would be an excellent required book for an undergraduate course. I highly recommend it.

Editorials

From the Publisher

"This extremely exciting book provides the reader the necessary basic information to appreciate how the traditional separation between the mind and the brain is nowadays challenged by the nomological network generated by the careful observation of the biological-neurological events and the related cognitive inferred concepts. Indeed, even though the ancient debate mind versus body has never ceased to be a subject of discussion by scientists and philosophers, currently it has become again a productive and stimulating scientific question, mainly because of the availability of functional neuroimaging techniques that has attracted the convergent interest of biologists, neuroscientists, and psychologists…this second edition looks quite appealing and the editors should be very proud of it. The numerous elegant and very instructive colored figures and schemas as well as the quality of printing enrich the "charm" of this book, which certainly deserves to be suggested to anyone interested in a better insight on the neurological, emotional, and cognitive processes of our brain."--Childs Nerv Syst (2020) 26:1251
